  1. How easy it’s become to lie. When did lying become a daily occurrence? As easy as reaching for a box of cereal or our favorite bottle of wine, lying has become accepted, if not expected from our colleagues, friends, and yes, even our family members. As adults, we brush them off as a necessity for not accepting invitations: keeping us from having to socialize with office co-workers; delaying discussions about difficult subjects; or simply to buy ourselves time to be alone. We like to think of these as, “white lies”…mistruths that are not meant to malign, but rather to spare the feelings of those asking us to share our time with them. It’s interesting that we have the term “white lies,” but not “black lies”…mistruths that would be meant to cause pain and not spare feelings. You would think in this day and age that “black lies” would be quite prevalent. Interestingly enough, children don’t differentiate in gradations of lies. A lie is a lie, regardless of its color or depth. But they also don’t like to call it a lie preferring to shroud it as being a secret. Secrets have the benefits of being blameless and detached. No one has to accept responsibility if a secret is found out. So today I have a secret to tell you, “I finished this paragraph in no time at all! The words flowed like a stream of consciousness. I didn’t hesitate to share my words with you.”
